MARY MACXINE

Grandma Mary_edited.png

Mary Macxine (Bowers) Wills is a native of South Carolina. Raised by loving parents Oscar Bowers and Willie Lee (Hipp) Bowers. She acquired her love for cooking from her mother. She enjoyed farming, flowers, and cooking. She always had a plot to tilt the ground for growing vegetables; flowers growing in the yard and could cook a five-course meal in an hour.

She moved to the District of Columbia to advance her career goals, working with salads & desserts and as a cook. She married Warren T. Wills and had three children, in which she passed the name Macxine to Gwendolyn. She shared her cooking gift with her church, family, and friends. She enjoyed her favorite gospel singer Marvin Sapp until her passing in 2017.

Mary affectionately known as Grandma Mary, was a gifted and amazing cook that captivated the taste buds of everyone who ate her food. People would come for miles just to taste any of her delicious home cooked meals and fresh baked goods!

Gwendolyn Macxine Wills is a native of Washington, D.C. She is a Registered Nurse, works in the travel industry and recently retired in 2025. Her mother, Mary, taught her how to cook, and she assisted her mother with numerous cooking engagements while growing up such as weddings, dinner sales, family reunions and church events. Gwen has three children of which she passed the Macxine name to Jherrica; and three grandchildren. Her greatest love is GOD and her family.

Gwen loves to laugh and has a good sense of humor. She is creative, an inspiring speaker, good listener with a “gift of gab” and these are the talents and gifts that she brings to Sweet Macxine.

When her mother, Mary, was no longer able to cook and bake due to health issues, that is when she learns to bake the delicious pounds cakes her mother craved. Now, she brings her mother’s homemade pound cake to your table.

Her baking philosophy is: Let your light shine in the kitchen which is evident by your pound cake!
